bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited, a joint venture between bp and Aberdeen City Council, has announced the final investment decision for its Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project. The project aims to support the region’s energy transition ambitions and position Aberdeen as a leader in lower carbon energy.

Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub Gets Green Light

Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Distribution Facility

The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub will feature a hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility located at Hareness Road, Aberdeen. The facility will be powered by electricity generated at a solar farm to be installed on the former Ness landfill site, ensuring a clean and sustainable energy source for hydrogen production.

Dr Oliver Taylor, chief executive for bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited, emphasized the significance of this milestone for the project, Aberdeen, and its people. He stated, “Not only does the hydrogen hub support bp and Aberdeen City Council’s shared ambition for the city’s future, it also presents a growth opportunity for the region’s supply chain and skills development.”

City Council’s Leadership in Hydrogen Adoption

Aberdeen City Council co-leader Councillor Ian Yuill highlighted the council’s leadership in bringing hydrogen to market for public transport and council fleet vehicles:

  • Aberdeen has been a leader among cities in bringing hydrogen to market for public transport and council fleet vehicles.
  • The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project is central to the council’s vision to increase the supply and demand for hydrogen as a fuel.
  • The project supports the city’s net zero vision and its commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

Louise Kingham, bp Senior Vice President Europe, commended Aberdeen City Council for their leadership in delivering lower carbon energy solutions. She added, “For bp, this is further evidence of how we are backing Britain by investing in support of today’s energy needs and those of tomorrow.”

Construction and Production Timeline

Following the final investment decision, the joint venture plans to proceed with construction activities, which are expected to begin before the end of 2024. The hub is targeting production from 2026, with the potential to deliver up to around 300 tonnes of green hydrogen a year through the initial phase of the project. This amount of hydrogen is sufficient to fuel 25 buses and a similar number of other fleet vehicles per day.

The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project represents a significant step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for Aberdeen and the surrounding region. By investing in green hydrogen production and infrastructure, bp and Aberdeen City Council are demonstrating their commitment to supporting the energy transition and reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
