Aker Carbon Capture has been selected for an important carbon capture test campaign on the Gulf Coast, working with CO280 Solutions and a top pulp and paper company. This campaign follows a successful preliminary engineering study and will pave the way for the full-scale use of multiple Just Catch 400 modular capture units. These units will permanently store captured carbon and create valuable carbon removal credits.
Aker Carbon Capture has extensive experience with over 60,000 hours of testing industrial emissions worldwide. Now, for the first time, their mobile test unit will be used in the pulp and paper industry. Initial results are expected by the end of 2024, ahead of the project’s final investment decision.
“We’re excited to partner with CO280 and a leading US pulp and paper company for this project,” said Egil Fagerland, CEO of Aker Carbon Capture. “This is a great business opportunity, supported by 45Q carbon tax credits and revenue from selling carbon removal credits. Our Just Catch 400 units are perfect for pulp and paper mills across the US.”
CO280 works with pulp and paper companies to finance and operate carbon capture projects, providing high-quality carbon removal credits to the voluntary carbon market. In May 2023, CO280 signed a major long-term agreement with JP Morgan for carbon removal credits.
“This is a big step towards capturing and storing CO2 from the pulp and paper industry,” said Jonathan Rhone, CEO of CO280. “We chose Aker Carbon Capture for their proven technology and expertise, which are essential for our carbon removal projects.”
The US pulp and paper industry emits about 150 million metric tonnes of CO2 annually, mostly from biogenic sources. By capturing and storing these emissions, we can achieve negative emissions, removing more CO2 from the atmosphere than the industry emits. This helps offset difficult-to-reduce emissions and historical emissions, crucial for reaching net zero by 2050. Aker Carbon Capture is already creating high-quality carbon removal credits with projects like Ørsted Kalundborg Hub.
“The pulp and paper industry is a key market for us in the US,” said Jonah Margulis, Aker Carbon Capture’s Head of North America. “Carbon capture technology offers financial benefits from tax incentives, supports local economic development, and helps meet US climate goals. We look forward to continuing our partnership with CO280 and other industry leaders to bring our proven technology to pulp and paper mills nationwide.”
Aker Carbon Capture’s Mobile Test Unit is a complete CO2 capture plant that can scale up results for full-scale plants. Their Just Catch™ modular units are standardized and pre-fabricated, making them cost-effective and quick to deploy. Aker Carbon Capture is currently delivering seven carbon capture units: five Just Catch 100 units to Ørsted, one to Twence, and a Big Catch unit to Heidelberg Materials at Brevik. These projects are helping develop mass production of carbon capture units, offering cost and delivery advantages for mid-scale emitters.
