BP wants to build a hydrogen plant on Teesside, and they’re asking for permission. This plant, called HyGreen, would make hydrogen by splitting water with electricity. The cool thing is, this electricity would mostly come from clean sources, helping to keep things green.

So, what’s the plan? Well, if they get the thumbs up, BP will start building in 2025 and finish by 2028. And get this – it could make up to 500 new jobs! Plus, most of these jobs could go to people living nearby in Middlesbrough and Stockton.

Why is this important? The government wants more hydrogen made in the UK, and BP’s plant could help with that. In fact, it might even give about 5% of what’s needed by 2030. Pretty impressive, right?

Initially, they thought about using the hydrogen to heat homes in a test, but that idea got scrapped. Instead, the hydrogen will go through pipes to nearby factories. These factories will use it for things like heating and other industrial stuff.

How do they make hydrogen, you ask? Well, they use a process called electrolysis, which splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. And don’t worry, most of this electricity will come from clean sources.

The plant would run all day, every day, making hydrogen non-stop. They’re asking people what they think about the plans until May 31st. A spokesperson from BP says this could be a big help for the environment, make jobs, and teach people new skills in the area.
