Governor Newsom Celebrates ARCHES Hydrogen Hub Launch

California became the first state to launch one of the country’s seven hydrogen hubs on Friday. Governor Gavin Newsom announced this at a half-day event in Oakland. The event showcased the state’s clean energy commitment and featured hydrogen-powered transportation projects. These included the world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger ferry and hydrogen fuel cell electric buses.

ARCHES Signs $12.6 Billion Agreement, Includes Federal Funding

The Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (ARCHES), California’s hydrogen hub, signed a $12.6 billion agreement in July. This agreement includes up to $1.2 billion in federal funding, announced last year upon the state’s selection as a national hub. ARCHES became the first of seven hydrogen hubs to sign their agreement with the Department of Energy.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Commends California’s Clean Energy Efforts

U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm commended the project. She stated, “Clean hydrogen is the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of energy technologies and a solution to decarbonizing industries we cannot live without. President Biden and Vice President Harris developed a modern, industrial strategy to build a clean hydrogen industry here at home—with California and the ARCHES Hydrogen Hub leading the way.”

400+ Partner Coalition Supports Hydrogen Hub Project

California created a coalition of more than 400 partners to support the project. The project aims to cut up to two million metric tons of carbon emissions annually and create an estimated 220,000 new jobs. It is expected to generate $2.95 billion per year in economic value from better health and health cost savings. At least 40% of the benefits will flow to disadvantaged communities through community-directed investments, workforce training, and family-supporting jobs.

Biden-Harris Administration Awards Additional Federal Support for California’s Clean Energy Initiatives

The Biden-Harris administration awarded California $12 million for three additional hydrogen projects across the state. This further demonstrates the federal government’s support for clean energy initiatives.

California Continues to Lead in Clean Energy and Hydrogen Technology

California continues to lead in clean energy and hydrogen technology development. The state’s efforts are expected to significantly impact carbon emission reduction, job creation, and the health and well-being of its residents.
