Innovative Cleanova.C-CLEAN Suite Supports Net Zero Emission Targets
Cleanova, a UK-based company, has launched its filtration technology for carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). As CCUS is crucial for achieving global Net Zero emission targets, Cleanova’s solution ensures captured carbon dioxide (CO2) is free from contamination.
Chris Nixon, Engineering and Products Director at Cleanova, states, “Filtration technology is pivotal in every stage of carbon capture.” He emphasizes the need for tailored filtration solutions based on specific conditions like CO2 concentration and emission source.
The Cleanova.C-CLEAN technology suite features several key components:
- UNIQ-MAX High Capacity Filters: Remove high quantities of suspended particles from feed gases to prevent absorb plugging.
- Liquid/Gas Coalescers: Ensure solvent purity.
- Activated Carbon Filters: Eliminate hydrocarbons and contaminants.
- Oil Mist Eliminators: Ensure clean exhaust air.
Nixon states that Cleanova.C-CLEAN “supports our mission to enable clean environments through innovative filtration solutions.”
The Importance of CCUS and Filtration in Achieving Net Zero Goals
The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that CCUS can deliver nearly 15% of the emissions reductions needed for Net Zero. In 2022, global CCUS capacity reached approximately 40 million tonnes of CO2 annually, with over 35 operational facilities worldwide.
Filtration is critical in carbon capture, involving solvents, sorbents, or membranes that selectively absorb or separate CO2 from flue gases. Post-combustion capture, a common method, uses amine-based solvents to trap CO2 after fossil fuel combustion. Without proper filtration, captured CO2 would contain impurities, making storage or reuse challenging.
The Global CCS Institute projects that over 2,000 large-scale CCUS facilities must be built by 2050 to meet climate targets. This highlights the growing importance of advanced filtration technologies like Cleanova.C-CLEAN in the fight against climate change.
