Pioneering Variable Compression Ratio Technology Aims to Improve Efficiency and Reduce Emissions
Marseille, France – Leading container shipping company CMA CGM is set to trial innovative variable compression ratio (VCR) technology. The technology, developed by Swiss engine manufacturer WinGD, will be tested on an undisclosed CMA CGM container vessel in September. This marks the first real-world application of this dual-fuel engine technology at sea.
The VCR technology will be installed on a WinGD RT-flex50DF engine. It has already demonstrated significant efficiency gains in factory tests for both diesel and LNG operation. WinGD’s process optimizes engine performance and efficiency by adapting cylinder compression ratios. The ratios are adjusted according to the fuel being used, engine load, and ambient conditions.
Sebastian Hensel, Vice President R&D at WinGD, emphasized the importance of collaborating with industry leaders like CMA CGM. He stated, “We applaud CMA CGM for their vision in promoting sustainable shipping and recognizing VCR’s potential.”
Driving Towards Net Zero Carbon by 2050
For CMA CGM, which operates a fleet of over 620 container ships, VCR technology could prove instrumental. The company aims to reach Net Zero Carbon by 2050. CMA CGM currently has more than 30 dual-fuel LNG vessels in operation. Many of its upcoming ships are also set to feature dual-fuel LNG capabilities.
In July, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering announced a 12-ship order for 15,500 TEU vessels from a ‘European owner.’ The order is believed to be from CMA CGM, and the vessels are understood to be dual-fuel LNG.
Transitioning to Cleaner Fuels
CMA CGM and other shipping lines have reportedly converted some methanol-fueled ships on order to LNG. This is amid concerns over the availability and scalability of green methanol in the future. WinGD believes in transitioning from fossil LNG to synthetic or bio-LNG. These alternative fuels can be made available at existing LNG fuel infrastructure in the future.
Initiatives to tackle methane slip from LNG engines and across the LNG production and supply chain remain a top priority. The industry is working towards a more sustainable future.
As CMA CGM prepares to test WinGD’s groundbreaking VCR technology, the shipping industry eagerly awaits the results. The test could pave the way for more efficient and environmentally friendly container shipping operations worldwide.
