Coca-Cola is introducing hydrogen-powered vending machines at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, beginning April 13th. Developed in collaboration with Fuji Electric, these innovative machines operate independently from traditional power outlets by using replaceable hydrogen cartridges.

How the Hydrogen Vending Machines Work?

The vending machines feature an additional generator module on one side that houses the hydrogen cartridges. This module facilitates a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, generating electricity that’s stored in an internal battery system.

These self-powered units represent a significant advancement in vending machine technology, potentially allowing installation in locations previously inaccessible due to power constraints.

World Expo 2025 Implementation

Coca-Cola plans to deploy 58 hydrogen-powered vending machines throughout the Expo grounds. Each machine will include an educational display explaining hydrogen power technology to visitors.

The company has not disclosed specific details regarding the operational duration before hydrogen cartridge replacement becomes necessary. While the technology eliminates power cord requirements, the machines will still need regular maintenance for both hydrogen cartridge replacement and beverage restocking.

Environmental Impact and Future Applications

This technology demonstrates how renewable energy solutions can be integrated into everyday commercial applications. The hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity with minimal environmental impact, aligning with global sustainability initiatives.

If successful at the World Expo, these hydrogen-powered vending machines could potentially expand to other locations worldwide, particularly in areas with limited electrical infrastructure or during outdoor events and emergency situations.
