On October 12th, Damen Shipyards, Windcat, and CMB.TECH unveiled the first of six innovative Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs). The launch took place at Ha Long Shipyard in Vietnam. The vessel is part of Windcat’s ‘Elevation Series’. It sets a new standard for efficiency, performance, and sustainability in the offshore wind industry.

Key Features of the New CSOVs

The 87-meter CSOVs are designed to optimize wind farm maintenance and support operations. They offer:

  • Accommodation for up to 120 personnel
  • Ability to remain offshore for 30 days
  • Hybrid-electric propulsion system
  • Efficient power distribution, eliminating the need for backup diesel generators
  • CMB.TECH’s dual fuel hydrogen technology

Joost van der Weiden, Damen Sales Manager Benelux, emphasized the vessels’ efficiency. He stated, “We expect innovations like these to add up to substantial reductions in fuel consumption and, therefore, emissions.”

Collaboration and Expansion

The partnership between Damen, Windcat, and CMB.TECH began in 2022. It has already yielded impressive results. The initial order of two ships has since expanded to six vessels. The final contract was signed in mid-2024.

Willem van der Wel, Windcat Managing Director, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. He said, “We have been working with Damen towards this day for some years now. To see the first CSOV glide into the water was truly a special moment. We are excited for this first vessel to hit the water today. We look forward to introducing this game-changing vessel to the world next year.”

The Future of Sustainable Offshore Wind Support

The launch of this groundbreaking hydrogen-ready CSOV marks a significant step towards cleaner maritime fuels and sustainable solutions. As the demand for renewable energy continues to grow, innovative vessels like those in the ‘Elevation Series’ will play a crucial role. They will support the industry’s expansion while minimizing its environmental impact.

With the first vessel now in the water, Damen will proceed with outfitting and commissioning operations. They will prepare for delivery in Q2 2025. As the remaining five CSOVs are completed, the offshore wind industry can look forward to a new era. It will be an era of efficient, sustainable, and comfortable wind farm maintenance and support.
