European airline easyJet has partnered with US-based JetZero to develop a new blended-wing aircraft. The aircraft is designed to be powered by hydrogen or sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). The collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels in aviation and reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.
easyJet Shares Expertise in Hydrogen Propulsion
As part of the partnership, easyJet will share its knowledge of hydrogen propulsion systems. The airline will work closely with JetZero’s Airline Working Group to provide operational insights and expertise. This will assist in the development of the innovative aircraft.
JetZero’s Blended-Wing Aircraft Design
JetZero’s blended-wing aircraft has already received $235 million in support from the US Air Force, NASA, and the FAA. The unique design offers several advantages:
- Up to 50% less fuel burn and lower emissions compared to traditional designs
- Improved efficiency, reducing the requirement for SAF per passenger by up to 50%
- Ideal for hydrogen storage due to the aircraft’s design, minimizing the impact on passenger capacity
The first JetZero aircraft is scheduled to enter service by 2030.
Accelerating the Path to Zero Emissions
David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer of easyJet, expressed excitement about the potential of the blended-wing aircraft. He stated, “We look forward to working with JetZero over the coming years alongside our other partners. Our joint ambition is to deliver a more sustainable pathway for the aviation industry.”
JetZero’s Co-Founder and CEO, Tom O’Leary, welcomed easyJet to the Airline Working Group. He emphasized the importance of incorporating hydrogen into planning for future platforms. O’Leary added, “JetZero’s blended wing body configuration delivers what the industry most needs today. It offers lower fuel burn, lower emissions and a viable path to zero carbon emissions.”
The Future of Sustainable Aviation
The partnership between easyJet and JetZero represents a significant step towards the development of sustainable aviation. By combining easyJet’s expertise in hydrogen propulsion with JetZero’s innovative aircraft design, the collaboration aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels and reduce the aviation industry’s environmental impact.
As the demand for sustainable travel continues to grow, initiatives like this partnership will play a crucial role. They will shape the future of aviation and create a more environmentally friendly industry.
