Energy Observer is making waves again! The company, known for its groundbreaking work in clean maritime solutions, is moving forward with its ambitious project, Energy Observer 2. This time, they’re teaming up with Chart Industries, a global leader in clean energy and industrial gas solutions.
What is Energy Observer 2?
Energy Observer 2 is set to become the world’s lowest carbon-emitting cargo ship. This innovative vessel will use liquid hydrogen for propulsion, which means it will produce almost no greenhouse gas emissions. The project is supported by key partners like Accor and Air Liquide and aligns with international efforts to cut emissions in the maritime sector.
Why Liquid Hydrogen?
The maritime industry needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Regulations like FUEL-EU Maritime and the RED III directive are pushing for near-zero emission fuels. Energy Observer 2 aims to meet these demands with its liquid hydrogen technology.
A Proven Track Record
Since its first voyage in 2017, Energy Observer has shown that hydrogen can power ships. Over the past year, the team has made great strides in designing Energy Observer 2, with help from LMG Marin, a leader in maritime decarbonization. This 160-meter-long cargo ship will carry 1,100 containers over 1,800 nautical miles and can operate for 14 days at a time. It uses electric propulsion powered by 4.8 MW fuel cell systems from EODev and Toyota.
Tackling the Challenges
Switching to liquid hydrogen isn’t easy. It requires new technology for supply chains and storage. Energy Observer and Chart Industries will work together to develop these innovations.
Jill Evanko, President and CEO of Chart Industries, said, “We look forward to collaborating with Energy Observer and the rest of their partners to decarbonize maritime transport while demonstrating the viability and potential of hydrogen as a marine fuel.”
Victorien Erussard, founder and president of Energy Observer, added, “The multiple industrial solutions of Chart Industries represent a major asset, reinforcing our motivation to push the boundaries of technological exploration for the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Thanks to their expertise, we envision significant improvements in performance and energy efficiency.”
Looking Ahead
Energy Observer 2 is a huge step forward, with an estimated investment of over 100 million euros for its design and construction. This project highlights the importance of public and private sector cooperation in advancing clean energy in maritime transport.
Energy Observer 2 isn’t just a ship; it’s a symbol of the commitment to cleaner, more sustainable maritime transport. It shows that with innovation and collaboration, we can push the boundaries and create a greener future for our oceans.
