The European Commission will support the development of Namibia’s green hydrogen industry with three EU-funded programmes worth €53.9 million. This investment aims to boost Namibia’s renewable energy capacity, create jobs, and drive the country’s green industrialization.

Investment Breakdown

  1. Green Hydrogen Investment Funds: Up to €50 million will support Namibian and South African green hydrogen investment funds. These funds will advance production, transportation, storage, and downstream industries related to green hydrogen.
  2. EU-Get.transform Programme: The EU and Germany will provide €2.7 million to support the Ministry of Mines and Energy. The funds will help with energy planning and expanding Namibia’s renewable generation capacity.
  3. Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme: €1.2 million has been secured to ensure proper regulation and support for the green hydrogen sector. The programme will establish effective mechanisms to steer and regulate the industry.

Strategic Partnership

European Commissioner Kadri Simson emphasized the EU’s commitment to helping Namibia achieve energy security and increase citizens’ prosperity. This aligns with Namibia’s Harambee Prosperity Plan and Vision 2030. Simson stated that Namibia’s green industrialization is a plan made by and for Namibians, with Team Europe honored to be their chosen partner.

Germany Recognizes Hyphen Hydrogen Energy Project

In March 2024, Germany recognized Hyphen Hydrogen Energy’s two million tonne-per-year Namibian ammonia production project as “strategic foreign.” Hyphen, an Enertrag and Nicholas Holdings Limited joint venture, could secure energy supplies and expand trade relationships. The recognition also promotes sustainable development and enhances security cooperation.

The EU’s investment in Namibia’s green hydrogen industry demonstrates the global shift towards clean energy. It highlights the potential for sustainable economic growth in Africa. As Namibia develops its renewable energy sector, it is poised to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market.
