Dutch shipyard Feadship has launched Project 821, the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell superyacht. This 390-foot (118-meter) vessel advances Feadship’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell System Powers Yacht’s Hotel Load and Amenities

Project 821’s fuel cell system can meet most hotel load and amenity energy demands for a week at anchor. It enables silent, emission-free cruising in environmentally sensitive areas and marinas.

The PowerCell Group-engineered system produces electricity and water vapor when powered by hydrogen. Project 821 can also run on methanol or HVO biofuel, reducing emissions by 90%.

Feadship collaborated with Edmiston and Lloyd’s Register to develop safety protocols for hydrogen storage on superyachts. Storing compressed liquid hydrogen at -487°F (-253°C) requires ten times the space of diesel.

Project 821: Largest Motor Yacht Launched in the Netherlands

Designed by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects and RWD, Project 821 boasts impressive specifications:

  • Steel hull, aluminum superstructure, and two 3200 kW ABB azimuthing thrusters
  • 17-knot top speed, 14-knot cruise speed, and 6500 nautical mile range
  • Sixteen 185 kW PowerCell H2 generators and a four-ton hydrogen fuel tank
  • Twelve guest staterooms for thirty guests, hospital space, and 44 crew accommodations

Innovative Design Features Enhance Guest Experience

Project 821 features 14 slide-out balconies, five shell doors, and seven opening platforms. A waste heat recovery system and smart AC improve energy efficiency.

The full owners’ deck includes private amenities, and an atrium stair wraps a circular elevator. Additional features include a Nemo room, 27-foot pool, and moveable glass bottom.

Feadship Commits to Sustainable Materials and Processes

Feadship prioritizes decarbonizing upstream processes, using eco-friendly materials, and delivering systems with net-zero carbon-free fuels. Project 821 represents a milestone in sustainable superyacht design and construction.

Edmiston, the owners’ representative, deems Project 821 “the best yacht ever built.” The yacht is currently for sale through Edmiston.
