GreenWaste, a waste collection company committed to sustainability, will trial a hydrogen fuel cell-powered refuse truck. Hyzon and New Way Trucks will supply the vehicle for selected Bay Area routes. These routes include the City of San Jose, County of Santa Clara, and the towns of Atherton and Los Altos Hills.
GreenWaste’s Commitment to Renewable and Alternative Fuels
GreenWaste powers its fleet entirely with renewable or alternative fuels. The hydrogen-powered truck will support the company’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. GreenWaste aims to reduce combined Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 45% from the 2022 baseline by 2030.
CEO Tracy Adams emphasized GreenWaste’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility. “We made history seven years ago by operating the world’s first full-sized electric side-loading waste collection truck,” Adams stated. “This pilot reinforces our commitment to zero-emission vehicles and sustainable waste management practices.”
Hyzon’s Experience in Hydrogen-Powered Waste Collection Trucks
Hyzon has previously supplied a hydrogen-powered waste collection truck to REMONDIS, an Australian recycling and service company. Hyzon developed the vehicle domestically in Australia.
Hyzon recently announced the start of series production for its Class 8 200kW hydrogen-powered truck. The company collaborated with Fontaine Modification, based in North Carolina, for this project. Hyzon will manufacture the vehicle at its facility in Bolingbrook, Illinois. The truck will feature Hyzon’s single stack 200kW fuel cell system.
Key points about Hyzon’s Class 8 200kW hydrogen-powered truck:
- Hyzon will manufacture the truck at its Bolingbrook facility in Illinois
- The truck features Hyzon’s single stack 200kW fuel cell system
- Hyzon’s system is 25% more cost-efficient than using two 110kW systems combined
- Hyzon developed the truck in collaboration with Fontaine Modification, based in North Carolina
