Hong Kong has taken a significant step towards sustainable public transportation with the launch of its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered double-decker bus. The Wisdom Motor DD12, powered by Ballard’s FCgen®-LCS stack technology, made its inaugural journey in February 2024, generating excitement among clean transport enthusiasts.

Zero-Emission Bus with Impressive Range and Refueling Time

The DD12 hydrogen bus, delivered to Hong Kong’s Citybus transit agency, has a capacity of nearly 100 passengers and a range of 420 km. Powered by an 80kW fuel cell engine developed by the Weichai-Ballard joint venture, the bus can be refueled in just 10 minutes.

Key Advantages of the DD12 Hydrogen Bus

  • Zero emissions
  • Quick refueling (10 minutes)
  • Long-range (420km)
  • High passenger capacity (nearly 100)

Historic Maiden Journey Draws Crowds

Hong Kong’s first hydrogen bus draws crowds at maiden journey

The launch of the DD12 attracted hundreds of clean transport enthusiasts, with one dedicated student queuing up from 3am to be the first to board the bus. The bus began its service at Kai Tak and traveled through various districts before concluding its 40-minute journey in Cheung Sha Wan.

Regular Operation and Future Plans

Since March 2024, the DD12 has been in regular operation on Route 20 between Kai Tak and Cheung Sha Wan. Citybus plans to have five hydrogen-powered buses on the road by the end of 2024, complementing their purchase of five additional electric double-deckers.

To overcome regulations restricting hydrogen buses from traveling through tunnels, Citybus plans to build a second hydrogen refueling station on Hong Kong Island, allowing for wider deployment of zero-emission vehicles.

Conclusion

The successful launch of Hong Kong’s first hydrogen-powered double-decker bus marks a significant milestone in the city’s transition towards a more sustainable public transportation system. The Wisdom Motor DD12 is set to pave the way for a cleaner and greener future in Hong Kong.
