Surrey County Council (SCC) has introduced 34 more hydrogen-powered buses to operate across the county. These buses join the existing 20 hydrogen buses introduced in Horley, Gatwick, and Crawley, West Sussex, in 2023. The new fleet includes 23 single-decker and 11 double-decker buses. All of them are UK-built and operated by Metrobus.

Zero-Emission Buses with 600-Mile Range
The hydrogen-powered buses produce no emissions. They have an impressive range of 600 miles. The buses will serve routes covering Salfords, Horley, Gatwick Airport, Crawley, Merstham, Redhill, Reigate, Woodhatch, and East Surrey Hospital. They provide environmentally friendly public transport options for local communities.
Surrey County Council’s £16m Investment
SCC has invested £16 million in the new hydrogen bus fleet. This is part of its commitment to sustainable transport. Ed Wills, managing director at Metrobus, praised the partnership. He stated, “This is an excellent example of partnership working. Together we can make zero emissions a sustainable reality today for the communities we serve.”
Additional Investments in Public Transport Infrastructure
In addition to the hydrogen buses, SCC has made significant investments in other areas of public transport infrastructure:

- £6.3 million invested in ultra-low and zero-emission community transport minibuses
- £9 million allocated for bus priority measures to ensure punctuality
- £1.4 million spent on improving passenger information at bus stops
Matt Furniss highlighted these investments. He is SCC’s cabinet member for highways, transport, and economic growth. The investments are part of the council’s commitment to enhancing public transport in the region.
The expansion of the hydrogen-powered bus fleet in Surrey demonstrates the county’s commitment. It is committed to reducing emissions and providing sustainable public transport options for its residents. As more local authorities invest in green technology, the UK continues to make strides. The country is moving towards a cleaner, more environmentally friendly future.
