Hyundai Motor Group has donated an innovative hydrogen fuel cell bus to the Korean National Fire Agency. The bus provides a space for firefighters to recover from the extreme conditions they face daily when battling blazes.

Hyundai Donates Hydrogen Bus to Help Firefighters

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Designed with Firefighter Input

The Hyundai Universe fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) was customized into a support bus based on input from Korean firefighters. The Jeju Island Fire Department, which received the donated vehicle, also contributed to its design.

Key features of the hydrogen fuel cell support bus include:

  • U-shaped meeting space with sofas
  • Premium reclining seats for rest
  • Compact cooking area
  • External air tent powered by the bus
  • High-pressure air and water guns
  • Storage for fire-resistant clothing to prevent contamination

Silent, Emissions-Free Operation Ideal for Recovery

The Universe FCEV’s fuel cell generates electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, allowing use of amenities like air conditioning and heating without producing carbon dioxide emissions. The bus operates quietly and without vibration, providing an optimal environment for firefighters to rest and recharge during their 20-30 minute breaks between shifts at major incidents.

Promoting Firefighter Well-being and Valuing Their Lives

A campaign video titled “Got Your Back” accompanies the bus donation. Narrated by a Korean-American firefighter, the film highlights the risks of the profession and the importance of the hydrogen vehicle in improving conditions for recovery. Veteran firefighters encourage prioritizing personal well-being, underscoring how the donation contributes to progress for humanity.

Advancing a Hydrogen Society

The support bus, fueled by green hydrogen from Jeju Island’s production complex, exemplifies Hyundai’s efforts to establish a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem. This aligns with initiatives like deploying XCIENT fuel cell trucks globally, which recently achieved 10 million km driven in Switzerland. Hyundai Motor Company CEO Jaehoon Chang’s appointment as Hydrogen Council Co-Chair further strengthens the group’s hydrogen leadership.
