On July 20, Kawasaki Motors, part of the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Group, made history by conducting the world’s first public demonstration of a hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle. The groundbreaking event took place at the renowned Suzuka Circuit in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, Japan.
Developing the Hydrogen ICE Motorcycle
Kawasaki Motors began researching hydrogen-powered motorcycles in March 2023, with the goal of creating a functioning prototype. The research and development process involved modifying the 998 cm³ In-Line Four Supercharged Engine found in Kawasaki’s Ninja H2 motorcycle to allow direct injection of hydrogen fuel into the cylinders. The motorcycle’s chassis was also redesigned to accommodate on-board hydrogen fuel canisters and a fuel supply system.
The Benefits of Hydrogen ICE Motorcycles
Hydrogen ICE motorcycles offer a unique riding experience, as they produce the familiar rumble and pulsating sensation that riders enjoy when accelerating, while emitting mainly water as a byproduct. This technology presents a promising carbon-neutral alternative for motorcycle enthusiasts.
Kawasaki’s Carbon Neutral Initiative
As part of their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality, Kawasaki Motors aims to develop a fully functional hydrogen ICE motorcycle by the early 2030s. This initiative is driven by the company’s desire to provide products and services that meet the needs of both customers and society while contributing to a more sustainable future.
Collaboration with the HySE Research Association
Kawasaki Motors is a full member of the Hydrogen Small mobility & Engine technology (HySE) research association, which focuses on advancing hydrogen technology for small mobility vehicles, including motorcycles. Through this collaboration, the company is actively conducting basic research on hydrogen engines, hydrogen filling systems, and fuel supply systems.
Strengthening the Kawasaki Brand
By pursuing innovative solutions like the hydrogen-powered motorcycle, Kawasaki Motors aims to further strengthen its brand and touch the lives of its customers positively. The company remains committed to exploring all possibilities in the pursuit of happiness and joy for those who interact with Kawasaki products and services.
