Lidl, a leading supermarket chain, has taken a significant step towards sustainable logistics by introducing a hydrogen fuel cell truck in its French operations. Since the beginning of 2023, Lidl has been utilizing a 26-tonne Hyundai Xcient truck, rented in 2022, as part of the Loire-Atlantique green hydrogen-powered logistics platform in Carquefou.
Hydrogen-Powered Truck Delivers to Nantes Region
The Hyundai Xcient truck, equipped with a 100kW fuel cell, boasts a range of 400km and is now delivering to Lidl’s supermarkets in the Nantes region. The truck refuels at the multi-fuel station in La Roche-sur-Yon, which opened in 2021 and is supplied with “100% renewable green hydrogen” from French producer Lhyfe.
Lidl’s Commitment to Energy Transition
Xavier Pierre, Lidl’s Head of Transport and Environment, emphasized the significance of this deployment in the company’s energy transition commitments. The adoption of the hydrogen fuel cell truck aligns with Lidl’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices in its logistics operations.
Expanding Hydrogen Use in Logistics
Lidl’s use of hydrogen extends beyond the Hyundai Xcient truck:
- In 2022, the company put 98 hydrogen fuel cell warehouse trucks into operation at its Carquefou logistics centre
- The initiative was supported by Lhyfe and Plug Power
- This further demonstrates Lidl’s commitment to integrating hydrogen technology into its logistics infrastructure
A Case Study for Regional Hydrogen Economy
Luc Graré, Head of Central & Eastern Europe at Lhyfe, highlighted Lidl’s roll-out of hydrogen-powered logistics as a “fascinating case study” for scaling up a regional hydrogen economy. As more applications for hydrogen are developed, having a reliable source of green hydrogen without the need for expensive or carbon-intensive transport will be crucial.
The Future of Sustainable Logistics
Lidl’s adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology in its logistics operations represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future. By embracing innovative solutions and collaborating with key partners, Lidl is setting an example for other companies to follow in the pursuit of reducing carbon emissions and promoting green practices in the logistics industry.
