Siemens Energy will provide a 280MW electrolysis system for EWE’s hydrogen plant in Emden, Germany. The project aims to complete by 2027. It will produce up to 26,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for regional industrial use.

The electrolysis plant is a crucial component of the Clean Hydrogen Coastline, a larger initiative comprising four sub-projects. The German Government and European Commission have recognized this project as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), classifying it as a strategic funding measure.
Government Support and Funding
Anne-Laure de Chammard from Siemens Energy’s Executive Board commented on the project’s importance. She highlighted the government’s funding commitments as crucial for realizing large-scale strategic projects.
The funding decision was recently handed over to EWE at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. Following this, EWE and Siemens Energy promptly signed the contract and initiated the project implementation.
Siemens Energy’s Electrolyser Production
The electrolysers for the Emden project will be supplied from Siemens Energy and Air Liquide’s multi-gigawatt electrolyser factory in Berlin. Opened in November 2023, this facility is expected to achieve an annual production capacity of at least 3GW of electrolysers by 2025.
EWE’s Role in the Hydrogen Value Chain
Stefan Dohler, EWE’s CEO, emphasized their involvement across the entire hydrogen value chain. This includes production, transportation, and storage of hydrogen.
Dohler noted that choosing north-west Germany and Siemens Energy focuses on regional and national value creation.
Clean Hydrogen Coastline Project
The Clean Hydrogen Coastline initiative, launched in 2021, is a $1.5 billion project involving seven of northern Germany’s largest industrial companies. This collaboration aims to establish a robust green hydrogen ecosystem in the region.
By investing in large-scale green hydrogen production, Germany is taking significant steps towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable industrial practices. The Emden project represents a crucial milestone in the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
