Execs from big energy players like BP and Repsol, along with H2 Green Steel, are saying, “Hold your horses!” when it comes to counting on natural hydrogen any time soon.
Everyone’s been buzzing about natural hydrogen lately, especially after some experts said there could be tons of it hiding underground. But at the World Hydrogen Summit, these industry folks sounded a bit skeptical.
Kajsa Ryttberg-Wallgren from H2 Green Steel, a company known for its green projects, said they’re keeping an eye on natural hydrogen but not betting the farm on it. They’ve got big plans, but they need to be sure they can get enough hydrogen to keep things running smoothly.
And the traditional oil & gas companies? They’re not diving headfirst into natural hydrogen either. Felipe Arbelaez from BP thinks we need more info before we start drilling for it. He’s worried we don’t know enough about where it is and how to get it out efficiently.
Maribel Rodríguez Olmo from Repsol agrees. She says we need to know not just how much hydrogen is down there but also how pure it is. Without that info, it’s hard to figure out if it’s worth the trouble.
Even SLB, a company in the oilfield business, is cautious. They’re looking into natural hydrogen and other ways to make it, but they’re running into some roadblocks. Rafael Fejervary says trapping hydrogen without it reacting with other stuff is tough. And there are still big questions about how to make hydrogen by messing with iron-rich rocks.
So, while natural hydrogen sounds promising, it looks like we’ve still got a lot to learn before we can rely on it for our clean energy future.
