TotalEnergies, a leading global energy company, has announced a major tender for 500,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen. The company plans to use this green hydrogen to decarbonize its European refinery operations by 2030.
Reducing CO2 Emissions in European Refineries
TotalEnergies operates six refineries across Europe, all of which rely on hydrogen for their processes. By switching to green hydrogen, the company aims to prevent the emission of approximately 5 million tonnes of CO2 each year from its European refineries by 2030. This initiative is a significant step towards achieving TotalEnergies’ goal of reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the company’s commitment to decarbonization in a statement. He said, “This massive call for tenders aligns with TotalEnergies’ ambition to decarbonize all hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030. We are undertaking green and low carbon hydrogen production projects at La Mède, Grandpuits, Leuna, and Normandy. Now, we are approaching third-party providers to supply us with green hydrogen to accelerate our operations’ decarbonization.”
Other Green Hydrogen Projects at TotalEnergies Facilities
In addition to the green hydrogen tender, TotalEnergies has announced several other hydrogen-related projects at its facilities:
- La Mède: The Masshylia project, a partnership with Engie to produce green hydrogen for the biorefinery’s needs, is currently in progress.
- Grandpuits: In November 2022, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide signed a partnership agreement. They will develop an innovative, circular system for producing 20,000 TPA of partly renewable hydrogen by recycling residual biogas from the biorefinery.
- Leuna: TotalEnergies and VNG, a German natural gas distribution company, signed an agreement in June 2023. The agreement is for the future supply of green hydrogen to the company’s Leuna refinery.
- Normandy: In September 2023, TotalEnergies and Air Liquide signed an agreement. The agreement is for the future supply of up to 15,000 TPA of green and low carbon hydrogen to the TotalEnergies complex in Normandy.
These projects demonstrate TotalEnergies’ commitment to decarbonizing its operations and transitioning towards a more sustainable energy future. By investing in green hydrogen and partnering with key players in the industry, TotalEnergies is positioning itself as a leader in the global shift towards cleaner energy solutions.
