Imagine ships that can power themselves using the energy of ocean waves. That’s the exciting new technology called Wave Devouring Propulsion (WDP). This innovative approach could help cut greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry and save on fuel costs.

Inspired by Whale Fins

Researchers at Cranfield University have developed a way to harness wave energy for ship propulsion, inspired by the movement of whale fins. They studied how whale tails efficiently use wave energy to move and created a simpler version of this action for ships.

How It Works

The WDP technology uses submerged flapping foils attached to the ship, similar to how whale fins move. These foils capture the energy from the waves and convert it into thrust, pushing the ship forward. This method can be integrated into a ship’s power system, whether it’s powered by electricity, hydrogen, or traditional fossil fuels.

Benefits of WDP

WDP offers several advantages:

  • Fuel Savings: By using wave energy, ships can reduce their reliance on fuel, lowering operational costs.
  • Enhanced Propulsion: This technology can improve the propulsion efficiency of marine vessels.
  • Environmental Impact: WDP helps reduce carbon emissions, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Dr. Liang Yang, a Lecturer in Marine Renewable Energy Systems at Cranfield University, led the research. He explained, “Wave Devouring Propulsion could revolutionize maritime sustainability. We’re not just cutting emissions; we’re steering towards a future where the shipping industry meets its carbon reduction targets and supports sustainable development.”

Future of Shipping

WDP can be used in small, unmanned vessels and integrated into hybrid propulsion systems. This makes it a versatile solution for the shipping industry, helping it move towards a greener future.

The research was funded by the Transport Research and Innovation Grants (TRIG) from the Department for Transport. This support underscores the potential of WDP to transform maritime transportation.

In summary, Wave Devouring Propulsion is a promising technology that leverages the natural power of waves to propel ships, offering both economic and environmental benefits. It represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient maritime industry.
