Chinese firm Shuangliang Group has unveiled the world’s largest alkaline water electrolyzer. The electrolyzer can produce 990 pounds (450 kg) of hydrogen per hour. It was announced at Shuangliang’s first innovation conference on October 18, 2022. The conference aimed to advance clean energy technologies and establish partnerships with other firms.

Efficient Hydrogen Production

The Shuangliang electrolyzer can process 5,000 normal cubic meters per hour (Nm³/h) of hydrogen. This is equivalent to around 990 pounds per hour. It achieves this while consuming less than 43.09 kWh of electricity per kg of hydrogen produced. This makes it the world’s most efficient electrolyzer of its size.

In comparison, Germany’s Nordex SE pressurized alkaline electrolyzer in Spain has a lower output. It produces around 22 pounds (10 kg) of hydrogen hourly. It consumes less than 50 kWh per kg.

How Alkaline Electrolyzers Work

Alkaline electrolyzers combine concentrated liquid electrolytes with a porous inorganic diaphragm and special electrodes. The electrolytes used are typically potassium or sodium hydroxide. An electrical current passes through the electrolyte, splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. The hydrogen is then separated and stored for later use.

Shuangliang’s new electrolyzer design facilitates large-scale, low-cost hydrogen production. This makes it ideal for industrial applications. These include steel production, chemical manufacturing, and hydrogen fuel generation. The entire process is powered by renewable technology. It results in no direct carbon dioxide emissions.

Applications of Hydrogen

The hydrogen produced by alkaline electrolyzers like Shuangliang’s can be used in various ways. It can be used directly as a fuel source. It can also power fuel cell technology in transportation and energy generation. Additionally, it serves as a raw material in the chemical industry. It is used for producing ammonia and other compounds.

Shuangliang’s new alkaline electrolyzer represents a significant step forward in clean hydrogen technology development. Its high efficiency and large-scale production capabilities are noteworthy. As the world seeks to reduce carbon emissions, innovations like this will play an increasingly important role. The transition to renewable energy sources is crucial.
